TOEFL iBT 2026 Format: Sections, Tasks and Scores

Effective from 21 January 2026
Based on current ETS materials

What changed on 21 January 2026?

ETS introduced a redesigned TOEFL iBT experience from 21 January 2026. Reading and Listening use a multistage adaptive design; task types and score reporting were updated. The test continues to assess Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. The exact number of items and the time can vary as the adaptive test responds to performance.

Important: Use this guide to understand the published test structure, not to predict a personal score. ETS's own test-day instructions and score guidance take precedence if details change.

Current section structure

SectionPublished task typesItemsApproximate base time
ReadingComplete the Words; Read in Daily Life; Read an Academic Passage50About 30 minutes
ListeningListen and Choose a Response; Conversation; Announcement; Academic Talk47About 29 minutes
WritingBuild a Sentence; Write an Email; Write for an Academic Discussion12About 23 minutes
SpeakingListen and Repeat; Take an Interview11About 8 minutes

ETS describes these as approximate base times and notes that directions are excluded; item counts and the time can vary as the test adapts. ETS advises candidates to allow approximately two hours for the complete test. Do not treat the section estimates as a guaranteed fixed appointment duration.

Adaptive sections

Reading and Listening use multistage adaptive testing. The difficulty or route of later content can change in response to earlier performance. A fixed, linear 20-question practice set cannot reproduce that adaptive behaviour. A practice score from a non-adaptive set should not be converted into an ETS score or CEFR band unless ETS publishes a validated conversion specifically for that material.

TOEFL iBT 2026 score scale

From 21 January 2026, ETS reports each section and the overall result on a 1โ€“6 scale in half-point increments. During a two-year transition period after January 2026, score reports also provide a comparable 0โ€“120 overall score. Refer to ETS's current score guidance for score interpretation and institution requirements; do not estimate a 1โ€“6 band from an unrelated practice quiz.

What MockTestVault's current reading drills cover

The existing Reading Practice 01 and Reading Practice 02 contain 20 traditional passage-based comprehension questions and use a 35-minute MockTestVault practice timer. They focus on academic passage comprehension skills such as factual information, inference, vocabulary in context and rhetorical purpose.

These are useful independent reading exercises, but they are not full TOEFL iBT 2026 Reading-section simulations: they do not reproduce the current adaptive routing or the complete mix of 2026 task types. Their result is an internal practice score, not an ETS scaled score. The question material is independently authored and is not official ETS content.
